THE FOOD CRISES, THE GLOBAL CHALLENGES AND THE RIGHT TO FOOD: ACCELERATING A JUST ECOLOGICAL TRANSITION OF AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SYSTEMS
The invasion of Ukraine by Russia have contributed to the exacerbation of a global and multidimensional food crisis unprecedented in decades. A war that adds to the persistence of conflicts in various parts of the world, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate emergency, aggravating a negative trend in the reduction of hunger in the world since 2016. A crisis that comes when a global process of comprehensive transformation of food systems had already started to make them one of the main levers for the achievement of the SDGs and the Paris Agreement, driven by the United Nations Food Systems Summit convened by the UN Secretary General in 2021. At a time when the international community, private actors, civil society and governments were focusing their political attention and investments on this transformation, the emergence of the crisis has added challenges to this process, which cannot be postponed. In this article, we examine the nature of this multidimensional crisis, the international responses, as well as the urgency of maintaining efforts towards a transformation that must be not only ecological, but also just, for the effective realization of the right to food and the 2030 Agenda.
