On 31 October we will present the first issue of the magazine DIECISIETE, an initiative of Acción contra el Hambre and the Technical University of Madrid on research for the Sustainable Development Goals, with an issue dedicated to basic income.
In addition to the presentation of the journal, the event will feature the authors of the issue on basic income, to have a conversation with the audience about basic income as an icon of the radical changes that need to be addressed if we want to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
We will also feature Ana Berenguer, former Vice President for Economic Analysis at the New York City Mayor's Office, who will explain the design of a basic income experiment in New York City.
Proponents of basic income argue its powerful symbolic advantages, in terms of solidarity, but also operational ones, such as less bureaucracy.
Its detractors point to the potential deterrent effect of refusing any work and its potential impact on public budgets.
The articles in this issue reflect a broad interdisciplinary perspective - law, economics, sociology, philosophy, engineering and history - in order to address the limits and opportunities of basic income, both in terms of desirability and feasibility.
This issue began to take shape at the open seminar organised by the UPM in June 2018 on the desirability and applicability of basic income in Spain, which featured Philippe Van Parijs, co-founder of the Global Basic Income Network.
A tool to showcase research on the SDGs
The journal Seventeen: interdisciplinary research for the Sustainable Development Goals was born with the vocation of becoming an instrument at the service of researchers committed to the 2030 Agenda, and to analyse the profound changes that our society is facing.
The alliance between a university and an NGO for the publication of this journal means, on the one hand, meeting the standards of scientific rigour and, on the other, being a means of reference for professionals from different sectors committed to the SDGs.
It also represents a balance between knowledge and commitment. As Carlos Mataix, Director of itdUPM, and Manuel Sánchez-Montero, Director of Advocacy and Institutional Relations of Acción contra el Hambre (Action Against Hunger), point out in the introduction to the DIECISIETE magazine: "There is no knowledge that is alien to the evolution of people, nor emotion that does not need reason".
When: Monday, 14 October, from 18:00 to 20:30.
Where: Assembly Hall of the ETSI Industriales de la UPM. Calle de José Gutiérrez Abascal, 2. Madrid (See map)
