How new technologies will impact society in the coming years or how Artificial Intelligence can help sectors such as the economy or the environment is a question we all ask ourselves.

Epidemiology has recently witnessed great advances based on computational models. Its scope and impact are getting wider thanks to the new data sources feeding analytical frameworks and models. Besides traditional variables considered in epidemiology, large-scale social patterns can be now integrated in real time with multi-source data bridging the gap between different scales. In a hyper-connected world, models and analysis of interactions and social behaviors are key to understand and stop outbreaks. 

This article provides some reflections and proposals on how to integrate ethics in engineering education, focusing in those related more directly to digitization and information technologies. Based on the demands that various institutions make on universities, the competencies that engineering students should develop are presented, as well as the methodologies, the academic context and the approach that is considered most appropriate for an ethical training that contributes to face current and future social challenges.

The article summaries some of the advances in digital government that Uruguay has experienced in the last decade. These advances are narrated from a use of data perspective and data-driven digital transformation.
